Over the years, Dance and Games for Kids has become one of The Haven's most popular and successful courses. What Denise Goldbeck has created is in fact two courses in one - the creation of the musical with all of the children, and the training of the 'Junior Leaders' - now known more appropriately as Youth Interns.
What the Youth Interns learn and practice as part of Dance and Games for Kids is leadership in its most practical form. Other, more traditional leadership courses for young people use adults to teach groups of young people how to lead. At The Haven, the Youth Interns learn from each other and the younger participants, as well as from Denise as the leader. Instead of learning about leadership, they are practising it in real situations every day.
We will build on what has been created through the Dance and Games course, and establish a Haven Youth Leadership program. Our aim is to set up a Youth Leadership program which will enable young people to have practical, hands-on experience of demonstrating leadership skills with their peers, groups of younger children and adults. Ultimately, the goal is that the program will become self-sustaining and be an opportunity that all young participants on Haven courses can enjoy.
We have already started on the process. For the first time, the Youth Intern training took place at The Haven this year. We are working with Denise on creating a structure around the Youth Interning process, enabling us to document, track and certificate the different levels. Training and marketing materials will be created and opportunities for funding and accreditation will be investigated. In the future, I hope the program will include our other extremely successful course for young people, Teens Alive.
In order to achieve our goal, we will require additional funding for the first five years. We invite you to become part of this exciting new venture, by making a donation to The Haven Foundation Helping Hands Fund for the Youth Leadership program.
If you are interested in making a donation, Rachel Davey would be delighted to discuss this further. Email donate@haven.ca and phone 1 877 247 9238 extension 235.
We believe that the Youth Leadership program will create an exciting future both for The Haven and the participants of the program. Thank you for taking an interest.
