Youth Exchange with Kitezh in Russia in 2013 and 2014

Twelve interns and graduates of the Youth Leadership Program at The Haven have a fantastic opportunity for a youth exchange with Kitezh in Russia. Kitezh is a non-profit community of foster families whose aim is simple: to give children a real chance in life. It is located in rural Kaluga region, south of Moscow. We hope to send a group of Haven Youth Leaders to Kitezh in August 2013, and welcome a group from Kitezh to Canada in the summer of 2014.

The youth who participate will not only have an opportunity to share their leadership training, but gain confidence and expand their perspectives on themselves and the world. It will provide an exceptional chance to try out a range of new skills and share who we are.

Kitezh is one of the projects of the Ecologia Youth Trust, an international charity based in Scotland that promotes the welfare of disadvantaged young people by providing safe secure learning environments where they can discover and develop their potential to make a contribution to their communities while protecting the environment. The Ecologia Youth Trust supports Kitezh in many ways, including making a connection with young people in other countries through their very well established Youth Exchanges and Volunteers program.

Denise Goldbeck is organizing the exchange and will accompany the group when they travel to Kitezh at the end of August 2013.

The youth who have been chosen will commit to raising $500 through personal fundraising towards the trip. The remainder of the funds will be raised through fundraising events and support from other organizations and individuals.

If you would like to support this exchange, you can make a donation to Haven Foundation and specify that you would like to support the Kitezh Youth Exchange. Go to our Ways to Give page for more information on how to make a donation.

If you know of any organizations or grant funding agencies who might support this wonderful opportunity, please contact Rachel Davey by email ( We will not only be fundraising for the 2013 exchange, but also to offer the youth of Kitezh the chance to come to The Haven in 2014.

You can find out more about Kitezh on the Ecologia web site here: There are also two videos on Youtube you can watch:

The first video was filmed in 2009 for Russia Today. The second was made by the leader of a group from  Bainbridge Island who regularly do exchanges with Kitezh.
