Before You Come can answer a lot of the questions that you may have after you register for a program at The Haven. Here we'll tell you about the normal daily schedule, what to bring, when is check-in and check-out, a few of the facilities and about the Bodyworkers. Thank you for registering for a program at The Haven, a not-for-profit charitable organization, located on beautiful Gabriola Island, British Columbia, Canada. We hope this information will answer some of the questions you may have before you come.

The Haven

For more than 30 years, The Haven has offered programs for personal and professional growth and development. Programs at The Haven are educational, and not psychotherapy or medical therapy, nor are they substitutes for these services. If you have medical or psychological problems, you must notify your physician or therapist about your participation in this program. You are fully responsible for you health and yourself during this program.


Participation in any parts of programs at The Haven is completely voluntary, and you can refuse to participate in any or all parts of the program and are free to leave at any time. Any personal information revealed during the program is confidential. You are free to discuss your own experience as long as it does not identify any other person.


The Haven management reserves the right to dismiss a participant at any time before, during or after a program if he/she:

  • Becomes dangerous or harmful to self, others, or property.
  • Behaves disruptively or inappropriately.
  • Is not able, for whatever reason, to be present for learning.
  • Breaks the law.
  • Refuses to cooperate with program leaders or The Haven management.
  • Does not pay according to The Haven terms and conditions for a program or services provided.


This applies to a time period that begins when a participant arrives on Gabriola Island to attend a Haven program, and is not restricted to The Haven property.


What to Bring

Here is a list of things to bring with you to The Haven. None of this list is required, but may help you make your stay as comfortable as possible.

  • Materials specified in your program description
  • Flashlight
  • Notebook or journal
  • Comfortable layered clothing, rainwear or umbrella
  • Swimwear for the hot tub (year-round) and for the pool (summer)
  • Shoes that slip on easily (no shoes are worn in the session rooms) and that are suitable for walking in the rain or along the ocean
  • Ear plugs and eye shades (if you are in the dorm or sharing a room)
  • Water bottle (we do not sell bottled water but do have water dispensers that you can use to fill your bottle)
  • Hair-dryer if you need one (none in the rooms)
  • Camera
  • Prescription medication that you may require
  • Long-distance calling card (also sold in our store)
  • An open heart and open mind


Getting Here

Gabriola Island is:

  • 20 minutes ferry ride from Nanaimo
  • 20 minutes by float plane from Vancouver Airport south terminal


Nanaimo is:

  • 20 minutes by float plane from downtown Vancouver or Vancouver Airport
  • 1.5 to 2 hours from Vancouver by ferry
  • 1.5 hours from Victoria by car

Offer or request a rideshare



Check BC Ferries schedule for information on sailings between Vancouver and Namaimo, and between Nanaimo and Gabriola. We provide transport to The Haven for foot passengers on the 3:50 and 5:00 PM ferries from Nanaimo on the first day of your program. Please contact our front desk reception on your day of travel to book our shuttle from the Gabriola ferry terminal to The Haven. 250 247 9211 x0 or


Check in and check out

Your room will be ready by 4pm on the first day of your program. Dinner is served from 6-7pm. Check out time is noon. On the final day of your program please remove any personal items from your bed by 9am so that our housekeeping staff can collect the linens.



Unless you have been informed otherwise during the registration process, your program will begin at 7:30pm on the first day and finish at about Noon on the last day. The typical daily schedule:

  • 8 - 9am Breakfast
  • 9am - Noon Morning session
  • 12 - 1pm Lunch
  • 3 - 6pm Afternoon session
  • 7:30 - 9:30pm (approx) Evening session


Massage and Other Bodywork

Various forms of massage and other bodywork are offered at The Haven. Book early to ensure availability.



The lodge, gym, games room and TV room are open from 6am to midnight. The gym includes: three treadmills; a step machine; an exercise bike; free weights and bench; exercise balls and floor mats; a small universal gym. The hot tub is open from 10.30am to midnight. The outdoor pool is seasonal and is usually available from June to September.



The Haven offers a range of comfortable dorms, rooms and suites. Our rooms and suites are designed to be shared by two to four people, and our dorms accommodate up to six people. Private rates are also available. We make every effort to meet the needs of all our guests, but cannot guarantee specific rooms.



Each room (except the Thunderbird Dorms) has a telephone with voicemail. Incoming callers will need your room number, which will be given to you when you check in. The special number for incoming calls is 250 247 9322. Local calls are free of charge. You will need a calling card to make a long distance call from your room phone. The Haven offers complimentary wireless internet access that covers most of our property. We also have computers available in the Satir Room with internet connection and a printer.



We have a very limited number of pet friendly rooms at an additional cost. Please speak first with a registrar before bringing your pet.


Eating at The Haven

We offer 3 meals/day buffet-style in our ocean view dining room featuring delicious and nutritious choices. We strive to please, but we may not be able to accommodate all special diet requests. Contact or call 800 222 9211 x1 in advance of your arrival if you have questions. Read more about our menu and mealtimes.



All guest rooms, meeting rooms, pathways, grounds and common areas are smoke-free. Smoking is only allowed in the designated area (Puffin, a shelter adjacent to main parking lot, near the Lodge). There is a $250 fine for smoking anywhere other than the designated area.



Please check your receipt and confirmation letter carefully and contact the Registrar if you have any questions. Please note that we do not accept personal cheques on arrival day.



If your program is cancelled, you will receive a full refund. If you cannot come to the program for whatever reason, please let us know as soon as possible. If you withdraw from the program for any reason before it starts, you have the option of transferring the deposit or any amount you have paid to another program. If you do not do this, we will send you a $150 deposit refund voucher. This voucher can be redeemed up to a year from the date of issue and can be given to another person to use. Any payments made over and above the $150 deposit amount will be refunded using the original payment method.
