Few emotions are more feared than anger. While some use the fear associated with unsafe, unboundaried anger expression to control, others mitigate their lives by continually trying to avoid any hint of anger. With either approach, the emotional constriction, physical dis-ease, and relationship dysfunction that result are life diminishing. Anger is a natural feeling that exists in all of us and when expressed in a safe, boundaried manner is passionate, life enhancing, and relationship constructive.

Here's a link to a short video featuring Joann Peterson about Understanding Anger from The Haven Learning Library.

You can also read about Tina Boehm's personal experience at Anger, Boundaries and Safety in this article from the Haven Shen Blog archive.

Format: The program offers participants opportunities to both express and witness the expression of, safe and boundaried anger. Initially developed by the late Joann Peterson, the program follows a progression: uncovering the participants beliefs about anger, a discussion about the origins of anger and it’s varied spectrum of expression, and finally a gradual exploration of the participants own energetic patterns and opportunities to experience various tools for anger expression.

This program is highly useful for people who:
  • Try to avoid confrontations and/or disagreements
  • Have been told they are a an angry person
  • Are holding anger and resentment for past events
  • Feel repressed, depressed, or emotionally numb.
  • Want to get angry but are scared of what might happen
  • Experience continual body stiffness or head aches or stomach discomfort

I have already utilized several of the tools that I learned, with my children and my husband, and I have to admit, I was thrilled when they worked so well!! Now, rather than dreading situations that would arise and escalate and get out of control, I am prepared and able to utilize the tools to take care of the situations before it gets even "heated" and am setting an example within our family of how we can all work together and support each other.

M.R. July 2011

I've been afraid to get angry for fear of hurting those I love. I now know that expressing this aggress energy is not only helpful to me but can help to maintain bonds between me and others.

When I left home to attend Anger, Boundaries & Safety I was preparing to end my marriage. When I returned home I was prepared to stop using my anger as a weapon and start using it with care and permission. Will I succeed? I don't know, and I do know I have a better chance now that I have the skills I learned during this impactful program!
