Ellery Littleton leads From Memory to Memoir

This program provides a creative approach to the writing of memoirs.  It offers opportunities to reclaim the most important moments of your life and transform them into intimate narratives.  The intensive journal-writing process employed during this meditative, inwardly-focused workshop stimulates both memory and creativity.

The memoirs participants write in this program represent the heart of their life stories.  There are many good reasons to learn to write them:

  • Writing for posterity – remembering so we don’t forget
  • Broadening self-awareness and exploring personal identity
  • Finding your own voice and writing style
  • Clarifying the purpose and meaning of your life
  • Discovering what is sacred in your life

Poem – “At a memoir-writing workshop” – from Ellery Littleton’s book of poetry “Riverwalk” – a poem a day for a year.

September 19

Pens scratching,

long deep sighs,

flute playing

in quiet space.

The invisible

cloak of privacy

enfolds each person

descending deep

into the sacred

well of memory.

“I have been looking through boxes of papers and notebooks, and came across some writing I did in Ellery Littleton's workshop in April, 1995. Thank you for organizing this, and the other Ellery workshop, which I also attended; they made a deep impression on me and shifted a lot about how I communicate. Please pass on to Ellery that the way I write now is much more from the heart, and is often such a sweet experience.”  Dianna –

Ellery Littleton’s most recent book – HUMMINGBIRD TATTOO – a collection of erotic haiku – was nominated for an American Haiku Foundation “Touchstone Distinguished Book Award” for 2011.  It is available in the Haven gift shop.

You created a real sense of safety, respect, delight even, for each person's creative voice. I loved the exercises and the variety of places they landed me up in myself, and I was amazed at the quantity and quality of the writing we produced as a group. You have created a wonderful space where people can explore their heartfelt truths.
