What we learned was so practical! I have applied these concepts every day since coming home. It has immediately reduced the power struggles and bickering among my kids, and helped me to respect their boundaries while affirming my love for them. I went to the class feeling frustrated and desperate for a solution; I returned feeling hopeful and that my feet are on a better path. There was valuable information but also lots of time to process and connect the learning as a group. There was such a lot of "heart" in the room – very cool! I have a renewed sense of the value of my parenting on the lives of my children and spouse. In the past few months I felt discouraged; as though I was just pouring away my time and energy with little reward. The program helped me see that I could refocus my role from being less of "parent" and more of a participant/advocate in my children's lives. Much more rewarding! And a whole lot less contentious. What I have learned goes beyond the actual material taught: it is the overall experience of relating to the instructors, the other parents, and coming back with a new attitude and confidence as a parent. It has been two days since the course and it has already made a big difference. I learned that Dave and I don't have to be a 'united front' or 'on the same page' – that we can teach Maya that it's okay to be different from each other, that remaining curious and willing to relate is more important than being on the same page. I knew this about relationships, but somehow missed it in parenting.
